Where the mountains finally meet the plains, you find the Dooars—the verdant gateway to Bhutan and a paradise for those who prefer the roar of a forest to the quiet of a peak. Unlike the high-altitude chill of Darjeeling, the Dooars region offers a lush, tropical embrace characterized by its sprawling alluvial floodplains, tea gardens that stretch to the horizon, and some of the richest biodiversity in India. What makes it a truly lovely visit is the sheer raw energy of nature; it is one of the few places where you can witness the prehistoric majesty of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros at Jaldapara or Gorumara National Parks.
Whether you are embarking on an elephant safari through the tall elephant grass, listening to the rhythmic flow of the Murti River at dusk, or exploring the leopard-spotting trails of Chilapata, the Dooars feels like a living, breathing jungle book. It’s a destination that trades manicured tourist spots for wild, untamed beauty, making it the perfect escape for anyone looking to reconnect with the earth’s natural pulse.
